The 6 major coat trends of the winter 2017
Friday 17 November 2017
A coat might be the most important purchase of the Winter. Not only is it the item that you will wear the most, it will also set your entire style and can elevate your outfit in no time. You can basically wear an old sweater and leggings on a Sunday morning, nobody will notice it if you throw a nice coat on top of it. I am sure that some will even think that this scruffy style is super edgy! Let’s face it, the majority of us stick to one coat per season because it’s an expensive purchase. Hence, the importance of choosing the right coat: it must match the rest of our wardrobe, suit our lifestyle (young mothers, forget white coats for a few years!), and our body type (it’s unfair, but you should stay away from long oversized coats unless you are tall with long legs). Focus on 6 major coat trends in 2017:
A RED COAT
We saw it in this recent post, red is the hottest color of the Fall-Winter 2017, and coats are no exception to the rule. Wearing a red coat brings brightness, cheerfulness and chic to our Winter looks that can be a little dull and sad. However, remember that red is to be associated with neutral tones: beige, grey, blue denim, black…don’t buy a red coat if your wardrobe is already very colorful to avoid tasteless color associations.

THE « MATRIX » TRENCH COAT
You are not dreaming ! The leather or vinyl trench coat as seen on Keanu Reeves in the iconic “Matrix” is back, a real revival of the 90’s neo-gothic trend.
If the boldest fashionistas will wear a long leather trench coat, the easiest option is to choose a shorter version in vinyl (you can be inspired by the sensual Catherine Deneuve in “Belle de Jour”!). In both cases, balance your outfit with classic pieces and do not wear another leather or patent item.

A CHECKED COAT

It is impossible to have missed the checked trend this season: it is basically EVERYWHERE and brings back the « business girl » look. A checked coat pulls out a sophisticated and slightly preppy allure, and will be quite easy to match with most wardrobes.
However, checked coats this season are generally long, with a masculine and large fit that does not suit all body types and sizes. Make sure that it does not make you look shorter!
A PUFFER JACKET

Agreed: this is not the most glamorous option, but puffer jackets are your best ally when you need a warm coat. Lucky for you, this Winter they are all the rage and you can choose from a wide variety of models, fits and colors. I recommend choosing a quilted jacket, and a feminine, soft color such as pale pink, cream of beige. Style tip: take inspiration from the runways and belt your puffer jacket to highlight your waist.
A ROBE COAT
Robe coats are now a Winter’s basic. This long, large and belted cozy coat is ultra-chic with casual vibes. But one more time, life is unfair: tall and long-legged girls will look amazing in this coat, but if you are short it can overwhelm your body and make you look even shorter. Good news, there are a few tricks to wear robe coats even if you are less than 5’3″tall:
-obviously, wear heels to lengthen your silhouette
-think about proportions: do not wear wide leg pants for instance, prefer skinny jeans that will balance out the look.
A FAUX FUR COAT

The faux-fur coat is another Winter staple, and this season our favorite designers took it to another level, inspired by the Haute Couture. The leopard print is trendy more than ever, but we also love multi-coloured faux-fur jackets, ideal for the holiday season!
