Style the bump: the ultimate maternity fashion guide
Friday 7 April 2017
As you might have noticed, I am 7 months pregnant, and like all future mummies, I am facing the eternal dilemnas : how to dress when you are a preggo fashion-addict and want to stay trendy ? Do you have to give up PRETTY for COMFY ? Maternity clothes : useful or unecessary expenses ? Good for you, this is my 2nd pregnancy, so I already went through all these questions and have 6 essentials tips to share with you.
1. Maternity clothes : yes, but only for the basics
Even if now you can find really cheap and cute maternity lines (H&M, Asos…), I advise my clients to only invest in a few basic pieces that will be useful the whole pregnancy : a pair of jeans with an elastic waist, a long striped dress, leggings…
2. Yes to large fits, only with a belt !
Being pregnant does not mean that you should hide your body under oversized clothes ! A baby bump is gorgeous, you should highlight it and be proud of it. I love loose fits, but I always wear a belt under the breast to add a feminine twist to the look and emphasize my baby bump.
3. Dig in your wardrobe the first months
Until your 7th or 8th month of pregnancy, you should be able to wear some pieces of your wardrobe (mostly tops). Look well ! We all have a floaty blouse, low-waisted pants, overalls (perfect to leave room for the baby-bump), or clothes that were too big but that we could not get rid of…now is the perfect time to give these a second life !
4. Buy versatile
Trust me, your pregnancy will be over in a snap ! So instead of focusing on clothes to wear DURING these 9 months, prioritize versatile clothes that you will be able to wear once your baby’s born, like a long and floaty printed dress or a blouse that will look great if you wear it oversized.
5. Yes to body-hugging fits !
Like I said before, you should highlight your new curves! I often recommend my clients to choose a high-waisted pencil skirt with an elastic waist : it will support the belly AND it looks so glamorous. You can wear it with a large tee or blouse, or a bodysuit during the Summer. I am also a huge fan of draped dresses, because they are very feminine and also support the baby bump.
6. Think accessories!
I undestand that some pregnant women don’t feel comfortable or beautiful during their pregnancy, and don’t really feel like dressing up. If this is your case, don’t forget that you still can play with your accessories ! Choose playful and colorful bags and shoes to brighten your outfits. Speaking about shoes, don’t forget that you will spend the following years pushing a stroller, so buy COMFY models ! Wearing heels is possible, but choose quality footwear with a great attention to the details (stable heel, comfortable arch…).
